The tension between Brazil and the United States has just reached an explosive level. The U.S. government, under the administration of Donald Trump, has announced a new and dramatic measure: the imposition of economic sanctions against Viviane Barci de Moraes, the wife of Supreme Federal Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes.
The decision, seen as a clear escalation of the diplomatic war, was made based on the Magnitsky Act. This legislation allows the U.S. to freeze assets and restrict financial transactions of anyone accused of serious human rights violations and corruption.
The sanction against Moraes's wife is the latest in a series of direct attacks by Trump against the judge. In July, the minister himself was already targeted with the same sanction. On that occasion, American authorities also revoked the visas of STF justices and their family members, in a move that shocked the world.
The motivation behind the retaliation is explicit: Alexandre de Moraes was the judge who recently condemned former president Jair Bolsonaro, Trump's main political ally in Brazil, to a 27-year prison sentence for an attempted coup. The U.S. government, without presenting public evidence, accuses Moraes of being responsible for "repressive actions and rights violations."
With war declared, the diplomatic crisis deepens, and the world watches with apprehension the battle of giants that could have serious consequences for the relationship between the two largest economies in the Americas.
