The Argentine government has just launched a desperate and high-stakes maneuver in its war against inflation. In a decree published this Monday (22), President Javier Milei temporarily eliminated export taxes on grains, such as soybeans, corn, and wheat, as well as their by-products. The goal? An urgent injection of foreign currency to halt the peso's free fall.
This radical measure zeros out the taxes that previously reached 26% on soybeans and their derivatives, and 9.5% on corn exports. The tax exemption will last until October 31st or until agribusiness companies declare exports totaling $7 billion. Milei's gamble is a direct appeal to producers who had been holding back sales, waiting for better conditions.
Argentina is the world's largest exporter of soybean oil and meal and the third largest in corn, making this measure a powerful tool to attract the much-needed dollars. The action also fulfills one of Milei's campaign promises, as he had indicated this would be one of his first major political decisions to reactivate the economy.
With the national currency in crisis and inflation out of control, this is the government's major bet to stabilize the situation and try to regain market confidence. The question remains: will a billion-dollar injection be enough to save the peso?
